• Wacker Neuson and STRABAG: Partners in the implementation of an inner-city construction project along Hamburg's Elbchaussee

• Challenging conditions for infrastructure renewal

• From compaction to lighting: Wide portfolio of construction equipment and zero emission solutions in application

Elbchaussee is one of the most magnificent urban streets in western Hamburg and is considered a real flagship of the Hanseatic city. Between Betty-Levi-Passage and Hohenzollernring, the approximately 1.2-kilometer section has been undergoing comprehensive modernization since 2025 as part of a cooperation project. The work involves drinking water pipes, electricity and gas infrastructure, and new footpaths, cycle paths and roadways. STRABAG AG has been commissioned to carry out the construction work. Various applications, the tight schedule and the confined urban environment now require precise construction site logistics and construction machines and equipment that are compact and, at the same time, flexible in use.

One partner for many applications

Carsten Weding, Regional Technical Manager North at STRABAG BMTI GmbH & Co. KG, relies on Wacker Neuson as a proven partner: "In densely built-up inner-city areas such as this, we encounter logistical and spatial limitations and have to meet numerous requirements – this calls for a well-thought-out selection of equipment, a broad product portfolio and a high degree of reliability."

Wheel loaders, excavators, dumpers, light towers, vibratory plates and vibratory rammers, including models from Wacker Neuson's zero emission series, are being used in various phases of construction along the Elbchaussee. STRABAG users need compact and sturdy solutions, especially in inner-city corridors, in order to carry out work safely and quickly.

The construction site along the Elbchaussee shows how successfully complex inner-city projects can be implemented when long-standing partners work together in a spirit of trust. STRABAG AG and Wacker Neuson have enjoyed a reliable relationship for many years: "Our exchanges always take place on an equal footing and are characterized by trust and partnership. A construction site like Elbchaussee in particular shows how well committed teams and practical machines work together. Taking responsibility together and contributing to the success of the project with well-thought-out solutions is crucial for us," explains Volker Steen, who supports STRABAG at Wacker Neuson as Key Account Manager.

Precise compaction: The new generation of vibratory plates

The DPU 52 and DPU 62 models, launched by Wacker Neuson in 2025, are ideal for compacting different types of subsoils. They enable precise working even in confined spaces and allow users to adapt flexibly to changing conditions on the construction site. Key Account Manager Volker Steen sees the main benefit in the new operating concept: “The new generation of vibratory plates can be controlled intuitively, performs well on asphalt as well as in trenches or on large areas, and thus reliably covers the various areas of application on Elbchaussee.”

Compaction without exhaust emissions

In addition, zero emission solutions such as the AS62e and AS68e battery-powered vibratory rammers demonstrate their advantages in the narrow trenches and the many small-scale work areas along the section. As an occupational safety specialist at STRABAG, Eric Bulk particularly appreciates the user comfort and lower risk of injury: "Electric construction equipment makes everyday work much easier – it starts conveniently at the touch of a button, eliminates the need for jerky starting, and employees are less exposed to pollutants."

Safe working conditions – even in changing light conditions

When daylight fades, especially in winter, a Wacker Neuson Light Tower supports the construction site teams. Its compact method of construction, quick positioning, and even light distribution ensure safe illumination of the work areas. The low noise level is an additional advantage in busy urban environments.

Successful together – a reliable partnership for the future

For the work on Elbchaussee, STRABAG AG can rely on suitable Wacker Neuson construction equipment and compact machines for almost every application in its application planning. In addition, both partners are united by a clear goal for the future: STRABAG AG is pursuing a strategic goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040. With emission-free and noise-reduced zero emission solutions, Wacker Neuson is making an important contribution to this development and actively incorporating feedback from customers such as STRABAG AG into its own development processes. The Elbchaussee project thus demonstrates not only efficient processes, but also a partnership that enables both sides to grow together and set new standards in urban construction.
